Description
Java Walnut is another of Nova’s newest exotic flooring products from Southeast Asia. The wood is a beautiful brownish-red color very similar to Dark Cumaru or Sucupira. The grain of the species is tight to wavy giving many of the pieces a unique rippled effect. One of the characteristics that sets Java Walnut apart from its Indonesian relatives like Kempas & Merbau is its hardness. While Kempas & Merbau are both sufficiently hard at approximately 1700psi, Java Walnut rates right around 2400 putting it in the same class as Brazilian Cherry. It is also very similar to Brazilian Cherry when it comes to stability.

Tree Characteristics:
Typically a rather slender tree with diameter up to 30 in. above buttresses; clear boles to 55 ft. but frequently fluted or twisted.
Geographic Area:
Malay Peninsula and extending into Indonesia as well as Sabah and Sarawak; found on flat hilly lands but not in swamps.
Color:
The heartwood is generally golden brown or red brown when freshly cut but darkening on exposure, some species becoming almost black. The sapwood is initially white darkening after prolonged exposure to light brown. It is sharply differentiated from the heartwood.

Grain:
The grain is typic ally interlocked, and sometimes slightly wavy. Ripple marks are reported to be prominent on flat-sawn surfaces, and quartersawn surfaces often exhibit a ribbon figure.

Texture is described as moderately fine to slightly coarse and is often even.
Drying Characteristics:
The material may split and check during drying and should be seasoned carefully.
Working Characteristics:
Difficult to saw and machine because of the high density, rapid dulling of cutters, dresses smoothly.
Durability Rating:
The heartwood is reported to be only moderately durable in contact with the ground. The sapwood is susceptible to attack by powder-post beetle. The timber is reported to be resistant to preservative treatment.
